One Piece Cast Hope the Netflix Series Isn’t as Long as the Anime

Actor Taz Skylar, who brilliantly portrays Sanji in Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece, expresses his desire for the show to avoid "excessive longevity."

Eiichiro Oda's magnum opus, One Piece, encompasses well over 1,000 individual chapters, and some of the prominent actors in Netflix's live-action adaptation appear to have reservations about faithfully recreating the entire narrative.

During a discussion with Collider, Taz Skylar, who flawlessly embodies the role of Sanji, the Straw Hats' skilled chef, shared his perspective on the series' length. "I hope it runs for exactly the duration it takes to reach a satisfying conclusion that pleases all of us—by 'us,' I mean the collective 'us' of the five main actors and every single person involved. My aim is for everyone to feel proud of the final outcome. I don't wish for it to end prematurely, nor do I desire it to extend excessively. That's my ideal scenario," he conveyed, with Iñaki Godoy, the actor portraying Luffy, expressing agreement.

Debuting in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997, Oda's iconic manga chronicles the journey of Monkey D. Luffy, the future King of the Pirates, and his diverse pirate crew as they navigate the treacherous waters of the Grand Line in pursuit of the elusive treasure that gives the series its name. With a staggering circulation of over 516 million copies worldwide, One Piece proudly holds the title of the best-selling manga in history. The story's immense popularity has led to numerous adaptations spanning various mediums. In addition to Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation, Toei Animation's acclaimed anime series boasts an extensive catalog of over 1,000 episodes, along with a plethora of tie-in movies, video games, and light novels.

Expectations Are High for Netflix's Live-Action One Piece Series

Although the cast of the live-action One Piece series may have reservations about committing to a long-term project, fans of Oda's masterpiece continue to express their admiration by creating their own content for the franchise, with cosplay taking center stage. For instance, Reddit user Gwyn_dol shared an impressive portrayal of Yamato, the son of Kaido of the Beasts, showcasing the character's vibrant design. Yamato, introduced during the "Wano Country" arc, swiftly gained a devoted following as a loyal follower of the legendary samurai Kozuki Oden. Many fans were disappointed when Yamato did not ultimately join the Straw Hat crew.

Furthermore, another Reddit user delighted the community with their spot-on Donquixote Doflamingo cosplay, capturing the flamboyant essence of one of the series' most sadistic villains. Noteworthy recent One Piece cosplays include a rock-and-roll-inspired rendition of Soul King Brook and an elegant interpretation of Nefertari Vivi.

The highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of One Piece by Netflix boasts an immensely generous production budget and is set to premiere at the end of August. In North America, VIZ Media handles the distribution of Oda's manga, while Toei Animation's anime series can be enjoyed on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix.
