Secret Invasion Reveals Why Nick Fury Doesn't Want the Avengers Involved

In the latest episode of Secret Invasion, Nick Fury shares with Colonel Rhodes the potential hazards associated with involving the Avengers in the battle against the Skrulls.

Nick Fury's decision to keep the Avengers out of the predicament he inadvertently caused with the Skrulls is grounded in a compelling rationale.

In the second episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series titled "Promises," Nick Fury (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson) engages in a clandestine meeting with Colonel James Rhodes (played by Don Cheadle) to discuss the imminent Skrull threat. When Rhodes suggests summoning their allies, the Avengers, Fury swiftly dismisses the idea, emphasizing the peril of the Avengers potentially being duplicated by the Skrulls and transformed into adversaries. He firmly asserts that the Skrull invasion is his responsibility alone, declaring it as "my war."

Back in March 2023, Jackson disclosed that Fury possessed a valid motive for not enlisting the Avengers' assistance in combating the Skrull invasion. "What he's not doing is calling in his super friends. So that's part of the whole dilemma," Jackson stated. "I mean, people want them, and he's not bringing them." The actor further elucidated that there existed a "very good reason he's holding back" from reaching out to them. Episode 2 seems to shed light on this rationale, unveiling Fury's apprehension regarding the possibility of the Avengers being surreptitiously replaced by Skrulls without his knowledge.

Secret Invasion, which made its debut on Disney+ on June 21, shocked viewers with a significant death in its opening episode. Cobie Smulders' beloved character, Maria Hill, who first graced the MCU in Marvel's The Avengers (2012), met her demise at the hands of the rebel Skrull leader, Gravik, in the closing moments of "Resurrection." Smulders, who had been aware of her character's fate since the beginning, recently expressed her surprise that news of Maria Hill's death didn't leak prior to the episode's release. "Given the number of people involved, I'm amazed that no images were leaked," Smulders remarked. "I suppose it's a testament to the level of respect that Marvel has earned over the past decade, where they want to avoid spoiling things for viewers. Fortunately, nobody did leak anything."

Secret Invasion draws inspiration from the immensely popular 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. The series revolves around Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, as he unravels the clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls led by Gravik, portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir. Alongside them, the show features an impressive cast, including Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Emilia Clarke as Talos' daughter G'iah, Olivia Colman as MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, Dermot Mulroney as United States President Ritson, Richard Dormer as Prescod, and Killian Scott and Samuel Adewunmi as rebel Skrulls Pagon and Beto, among others.
