Nintendo Switch Online Adds Four Sega Genesis Classics

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers now have access to four new Sega Genesis games. The recently added titles include The Revenge of Shinobi, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Landstalker, and Crusader of Centy. While Crusader of Centy may not be well-known to those who didn't own a Sega Genesis, this 1994 release drew comparisons to Nintendo's beloved Zelda franchise. Although the action-RPG has been largely forgotten, Nintendo fans now have the opportunity to see how it measures up to Link's classic 2D adventures. Notably, Revenge of Shinobi features enemies inspired by Batman and Spider-Man, making it an exciting addition to the collection.

While some of Nintendo Switch Online's retro apps are accessible to all subscribers, the Sega Genesis app is exclusively available to Expansion Pack subscribers. Along with the Sega Genesis app, the Expansion Pack offers access to apps featuring Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 games. Several of the games found in the Sega Genesis app are also part of the Sega Genesis Classics compilation, which can be purchased on the eShop. However, among the games released today, only Landstalker is included in that collection.

During its heyday, the Sega Genesis posed as Nintendo's strongest competitor in the video game industry. The console achieved considerable success in North America, with Sega's exceptional advertising campaigns positioning the Genesis as the hip alternative to the Super Nintendo. Times have changed significantly since then, and Nintendo and Sega have grown closer in the modern era. Following Sega's departure from the console business in 2001, they have brought many of their franchises to Nintendo systems. For fans who grew up in the early '90s, the notion of playing Sega Genesis games on a Nintendo system still feels surreal, but the hope remains for an expanded game library in the future!
