Secret Invasion Includes an Easter Egg From Netfilx's Daredevil

An Easter egg from Netflix's Daredevil series makes a cameo in the second episode of Marvel Studios' Disney+ limited series, Secret Invasion.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 2, "Promises," now streaming on Disney+.

According to The Direct, "Promises," the second episode of the Disney+ show, includes a clever nod to Daredevil that some fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have missed on their initial viewing.

In this episode, a Skrull disguises itself as FXN anchor Chirs Stearns, portrayed by Christopher McDonald, known for his role in Happy Gilmore. FXN, short for Faxion News Network, is a television news channel that first appeared in the MCU during the third and final season of Daredevil. FXN made its debut in the episode titled "One Last Shot" of Daredevil's third season, where its reporters listened to Karen Page's impromptu press conference regarding the killings committed by an imposter pretending to be Daredevil. Notably, Secret Invasion is the second MCU project to incorporate FXN into its storyline.

Is Netflix's Daredevil Canon?

While Marvel television series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Runaways, and Daredevil were initially released with the "It's All Connected" branding, implying their inclusion in the MCU, Marvel Studios has never officially confirmed their status within the official MCU timeline. However, in recent years, Marvel Studios has gradually reintroduced ideas and characters from these shows into the MCU, even though they were not involved in their production. This is evident in instances like Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprising their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively, in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye.

Although the Netflix/Marvel shows, which are now exclusively streaming on Disney+, are not categorized under the streamer's "MCU in Timeline Order," an April 2023 rumor suggests that the first season of Daredevil may soon become canon in the MCU. According to Marvel insider CanWeGetSomeToast, the upcoming MCU series Echo, a spinoff of Hawkeye, will feature elements that establish the entire Daredevil series as canon within the MCU. Jack McBryan, co-founder of The Direct, supported CanWeGetSomeToast's claim by mentioning a specific plot element in Born Again (a Daredevil comic storyline) that directly references an event from Season 1 of Daredevil.

Daredevil: Born Again Halts Filming

Daredevil: Born Again, serving as a spiritual sequel to the Netflix Daredevil series, brings together Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, marking their reunion since the Netflix show. While specific details about the plot of Born Again are being kept under wraps, the Disney+ series is expected to continue the storylines established in the upcoming MCU limited series, Echo, including Kingpin's rumored bid for the position of mayor of New York City. Production for the 18-episode first season of Daredevil: Born Again commenced in February 2023 but was unfortunately interrupted in June due to the WGA strike protests. The resumption of filming remains uncertain at this time.

Both Daredevil and Secret Invasion are available for streaming on Disney+.
