Tomb Raider: Phoebe Waller-Bridge Is Staying True to Lara Croft for New Amazon Series
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has recently shared her thoughts on Lara Croft and how her perspective might influence the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series. Lara Croft is widely regarded as one of the most iconic characters in gaming, particularly recognized as a strong female protagonist. While other characters like Samus and even Princess Peach have also made their mark, Lara Croft stands tall among them, especially considering her successful transition to the big screen with Angelina Jolie's portrayal. Although the earlier Tomb Raider movies were met with mixed reception, the rebooted film showed improvement, although unfortunately, a sequel did not materialize despite efforts to make it happen.
Now, Amazon is in the process of developing a new Tomb Raider TV series, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge leading the project. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Waller-Bridge expressed her deep-rooted affection for the franchise, which originated on the original PlayStation when she was a child. She highlighted Lara Croft's confidence and attitude as key attributes that captured her attention. However, Waller-Bridge acknowledged that the character's direction shifted when marketers realized her potential as a sex symbol. This realization has sparked discussions in the writer's room about the portrayal of Lara Croft's physique in the upcoming TV show. Waller-Bridge explained, "As a tomb raider, she needs to be incredibly fit. Constantly maneuvering through narrow rock crevices presents a different experience depending on one's body proportions."
Currently, progress on the Tomb Raider series has been hindered by a writers' strike, leaving fans uncertain about its release date. While it appears to be in the early stages of development, hopefully, significant updates will be unveiled in the not-too-distant future.
