Secret Invasion Star Reacts to 'Wonderful' Fan Responses to Maria Hill's Exit
Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders is grateful for the overwhelming positive response from fans following Maria Hill's exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Season 1, Episode 2, now streaming on Disney+.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smulders expressed her appreciation for the outpouring of support after Episode 1, titled "Resurrection," where Hill's character met a surprising demise. Fans were deeply affected by the loss of Nick Fury's ally and the S.H.I.E.L.D agent-turned-spy, and Smulders acknowledged the significance of Hill to the audience based on the feedback she came across. While she hasn't been extensively involved in online discussions, she did take note of the fans' caring reactions. "I honestly haven't been engaging too much, but I have been [online] a little bit, and it's heartwarming to see people's concern for her character's death," she shared. "One of the most incredible aspects of this job is witnessing the love that people have for these productions, these characters, and these stories. It's truly a gift."
Will Maria Hill Appear in Other MCU Projects?
Despite initially suggesting that her involvement in Secret Invasion would mark the end of her MCU journey, Cobie Smulders has now confirmed that her character will continue to appear in future Marvel projects. Smulders disclosed that she will be lending her voice to the character of Maria Hill in the upcoming Disney Channel animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Having made her debut in 2012's The Avengers, Hill has become a beloved fixture in the MCU. She has appeared in various Avengers films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and will also feature in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.
Joining Smulders in Secret Invasion are Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Emilia Clarke as G'iah, Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, and Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine. The series delves into Fury's altered persona and the toll of the losses he has endured while combating the Skrull invasion, which was sparked by a perceived broken promise to find them a new home alongside Carol Danvers.
Early reviews for Secret Invasion have been generally positive, although it currently holds the lowest critical score among Disney+ MCU shows on Rotten Tomatoes. The series explores darker themes, prompting content warnings in certain regions. As the MCU's first "event," Secret Invasion promises to deliver more shocking twists as the narrative unfolds.
Episode 3 of Secret Invasion is set to premiere on Disney+ on July 5th.
