Secret Invasion’s Cobie Smulders Isn’t Done with Marvel Yet

Maria Hill actor Cobie Smulders has revealed that there are plans in the works for the former high-ranking agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to appear again in the MCU.

Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders recently disclosed that the Disney+ limited series won't mark her final appearance as the recently-departed Maria Hill.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smulders remained secretive about Hill's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mentioning that she does not have control over those decisions. However, Marvel fans can expect to see Smulders continuing to voice Maria Hill in the animated Disney Channel series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. She stated, "I'm still involved in the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated show — I just recorded some episodes today. So I don't know when or how she'll come back to me, but I'm always open to the call."

Smulders made her debut as the high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in 2012's Marvel's The Avengers, where she served as Nick Fury's second-in-command. She subsequently portrayed Hill in the ABC superhero drama series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as in the films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), she also played a Skrull disguised as Hill. In addition to Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Smulders voiced Hill in the Disney+ series, What If...?.

Secret Invasion Gives Nick Fury a Wife

Maria Hill's death was not the only shocking moment in Secret Invasion. In the second episode of the Disney+ limited series, titled "Promises," a surprising revelation came to light as Nick Fury was revealed to be married to a female Skrull. The way the episode was shot left some fans speculating whether Fury was aware of his wife's true identity. However, director Ali Selim clarified that Fury is indeed aware that his wife is a Skrull, although they intentionally maintained an ambiguous tone in the episode. Selim explained, "In the script, he knows. And when we shot it, it was interesting that maybe he didn't know. We ultimately edited it in a way that made people feel like, 'I wonder if he knows or not.'"

Secret Invasion draws inspiration from the popular 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. The series follows Nick Fury, portrayed by MCU veteran Samuel L. Jackson, as he uncovers a covert invasion of Earth orchestrated by a radicalized faction of Skrulls. These shapeshifting, green-skinned extraterrestrials first appeared in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. The ensemble cast of the series includes Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, the leader of the rebellious Skrulls, along with Don Cheadle as Colonel James Rhodes, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Emilia Clarke as G'iah (Talos' daughter), and Olivia Colman as MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, among others. The first two episodes of Secret Invasion are now available for streaming on Disney+.
