The Irregular at Magic High School to Receive a 2024 Anime Series

Studio 8-Bit is making a comeback with a new anime sequel for "The Irregular at Magic High School," continuing the story of Tatsuya Shiba.

The highly anticipated sequel is slated for release sometime next year, and a brief teaser trailer has been unveiled to whet fans' appetite during the wait. Reprising their roles from the original series, three members of the voice cast will be returning for the sequel. Saori Hayami (known for "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?") will once again lend her voice to Miyuki Shiba, while Yūichi Nakamura (renowned for "Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-") will portray Tatsuya Shiba. Additionally, Kiyono Yasuno (from "Ascendance of a Bookworm") will resume her role as Minami Sakurai.

In addition, 8-Bit, which took over from Madhouse as the animation studio for the second season of the original "The Irregular at Magic High School" anime, will once again be responsible for producing the sequel. The project will be helmed by Jimmy Stone (known for "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond") as the director, while Taku Iwasaki (renowned for "Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars") will compose the music.

"The Irregular at Magic High School" is based on Tsutomu Satō's light novel series, which was published by Dengeki Bunko from July 2011 to September 2020, spanning a total of 32 volumes. Set in an alternate reality where magic and technology coexist, the story revolves around the sibling duo of Tatsuya and Miyuki as they enter a prestigious magic high school. While Miyuki is celebrated for her exceptional magical abilities, Tatsuya faces criticism and exclusion due to his apparent lack of talent.

The light novels have enjoyed immense success, frequently ranking among the top-selling titles in Japan during their initial release. They have sold over 22 million copies worldwide. A direct sequel series, titled "The Irregular at Magic High School Magian Company," began serialization in October 2020, further fueling the franchise's popularity along with its anime adaptations.

In addition to the television series produced by Madhouse and 8-Bit, two movies have been released within the franchise. "The Irregular at Magic High School: The Movie – The Girl Who Summons the Stars," premiered in 2016, featuring a new story not seen in the light novels. "The Irregular at Magic High School: Reminiscence Arc" adapts the events of the arc with the same name from the books and made its debut in December 2021.

Yen Press holds the distribution rights for Satō's books in North America, and the first season of "The Irregular at Magic High School" anime is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
